Women's Place, St. Catharines

A charitable organization that assists abused women and their children. Qualified and experienced staff provide telephone counselling 24-hours a day; one-to-one and group counselling; safe, temporary shelter in a 24-bed home; meals and emergency clothing; children's counselling and recreation programs; support programs for women in the community who are fleeing from violence; family law advice and information, and advocacy in the criminal justice system; violence prevention programs in schools; and referrals to other community services. Also offers speakers on women's abuse and related topics and undertakes in community fundraising.

Women's Place of South Niagara - Visit Website
Provides shelter (Welland and Niagara Falls locations) for abused women and their children. Services include: crisis intervention and emotional support, one-on-one case planning based on an educational model, support groups, child/youth programming, court support services, public education, volunteer training, information and referrals. Note: Individual visits can be arranged for women who do not wish to stay in the shelter but require help.

Legal Information Ontario (LIO) is a non-profit organization that provides Ontario residents with easy to understand legal information through four different services. Legal Line is a 24-hour touch tone telephone service; Legal Line Fax Back, a 24-hour automated fax on demand service; Legal Line Online, a comprehensive web site and Legal Line Live, a lawyer referral program.

Legal Aid - Visit Website
A program which provides financial assistance in the form of a Legal Aid Certificate to eligible applicants who need to retain a lawyer but cannot afford one. Certificates are provided on a pay-back, lien or free basis depending on eligibility. Also provides panels of duty lawyers for criminal, family and refugee cases. Will assist only seniors in receipt of Old Age Security, Guaranteed Income Supplement and GAINS with their will.

Niagara North Community Legal Assistance - Visit Website
Summary legal advice, advocacy assistance and legal representation for persons who cannot afford to pay and whose problems would not be covered under a Legal Aid Certificate. Offers assistance with Workers' Compensation, Landlord/Tenant, Ontario Works/Ontario Disability Support Program, Employment Insurance, Human Rights (on a case by case basis), Small Claims Court (seniors and disabled only), Criminal Injuries Compensation, and Consumer Problems.

Niagara Region Sexual Assault Centre (CARSA) - Visit Website
Provides support and counselling to survivors of sexual assault, incest and childhood sexual abuse. Offers 24- hour crisis line - anonymous and confidential - for survivors of recent or past sexual assault and abuse. Individual counselling, support groups and theme-based workshops for survivors and support available for family and friends. Outreach counselling available at several locations throughout Niagara region.

Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Health Services Niagara

Serves anyone reporting to an emergency department in the Niagara Region. Individuals who have been sexually assaulted within the last three days. Services are provided through a specialized team sensitive to the needs of survivors. Options of care include emotional support. prophylactic treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, HIV post exposure prophylaxis, pregnancy prevention and the collection of forensic evidence to assist in the legal process. Victims of domestic violence have options of medical treatment, documentation of injuries, safety planning and police involvement. For emergency treatment, go to any emergency department in the Niagara Region. The Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence treatment nurse will be paged. Counselling referrals can be made for clients (as well as family members and/or significant others) accessing this service through the emergency department. Additionally, referrals are accepted for clients who experienced assault within the past two years. Call (905) 684-7271 ext. 45300.

Services are available to victims and witnesses of crime after criminal charges have been laid. Although the program is open to all victims or witnesses, it offers services on a priority basis to those who have been most traumatized by the crime, especially victims of partner assault, sexual assault, child abuse are elderly victims or are families of homicide victims.
